1965 Z16 L37 396/375 1966 427/425HP L72 Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner
DESCRIPTION
1965 L37 396/375HP Z-16 1966 427/425HP L72 Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner. This is an original (OEM) assembly that has been refinished to a period correct image. The assembly features the original flat bottom base with the correct dual snorkels that are attached without the revised flanges or base groove as was the 1970 and later Z-28 LT1 assemblies. Both snorkel inlets are very nice with minimal distortion (very minor impressions on top of driver's side), as are the original interior flanges that they were welded to by the factory. The original GM stamped & dimpled spark arrestor screen is excellent and sits perched on top of the original flame arrestor tube and has an original rubber adapter fitting - all as installed by the factory. The exterior features a correct PN GM licensed reproduction air cleaner service decal PN 6421970 (65 396/375). Note that the base features factory stamping patterns that remain in place as found.
A reproduction triple-plated chrome lid enhances the assembly and comes with a new seal. It is garnished with a choice of 396/375HP or 427/425HP Turbo-Jet Decals (please select your choice with a note to us). We'll install your choice of decals prior to shipping. Note that original Z16 air cleaner lids came with a bolt-on die-cast emblem - available through reproduction suppliers.
The assembly is completed with a new heavy duty air filter and period correct wing nut.
This is an extremely rare assembly that was made available on a very limited number of cars. 1965 models featured the chrome lid, while 1966 cars featured a black lid. A collage of photos showing the as-is condition of the assembly prior to the restoration, as well as comparisons to an original 1970 Z28 air cleaner, illustrates the originality of all the components. Some additional points of clarification for the early style dual snorkel:
- Flat bottom base (later models were ridged)
- Snorkels mount to flanges extending from base (later models used flanged snorkels)
- Limited indentations on rear points clearance area at rear of base (later models featured additional wrinkles)
- GM stamped flame arrestor screen
We welcome any questions regarding this air cleaner that you may have.
